Oxford Nanopore Pilot Project Competition 2026

The MIT BioMicro Center and Oxford Nanopore Technologies invite MIT researchers to submit proof-of-concept proposals addressing biological questions that could benefit from long-read sequencing. Projects may extend existing research or explore new applications using standard Oxford Nanopore protocols. Proposals should be concise, self-contained, and executable within three months using researcher-provided samples, controls, or standards. Samples must be ready to sequence by December 2026.

What We Provide:

Oxford Nanopore Technologies will provide four complimentary PromethION flow cells to support up to four selected projects. Proposals can be for 1 or 2 flowcells. MIT BioMicro Center will cover the costs of sample QC and discount the cost of library prep by 50%. Participating labs are responsible for remaining sample-preparation costs.

What to Submit:

Submit a brief, two- to three-paragraph proposal through https://forms.gle/RsudFxAc1aUdJSLA7 Please include in your statement • The biological question and how Oxford Nanopore sequencing will help answer it. • Sample type, number of samples, and proposed standard protocol or kit. • Project scope, anticipated sequencing date, and success metrics. • Current sample readiness and any preparation steps remaining to meet the December 1 deadline. Selection and Scope: Projects will be selected based on biological relevance, a clear long-read advantage, feasibility, use of standard Oxford Nanopore protocols, and sample readiness for sequencing by December 1. Priority will be given to projects ready to run promptly. Custom protocol development and nonstandard workflows are outside the scope of this competition.

Key Dates

Submission deadline: November 11, 2026 Selected projects announced: November 20, 2026 Samples ready to sequence: December 1, 2026 Proof-of-concept outcomes may be shared with the MIT community through seminars, subject to explicit written permission and PI approval.
