{{BioMicroCenter}} = The BioMicro Center is Hiring! = == BioMicro Center: Informatics == No full time or part time bioinformatics or bioIT positions are available at this time. == [http://web.mit.edu/urop/ UROP 1] == '''Project Title:''' Mutation Identification using Next-Generation Sequencing.
'''Project Description:''' The practice of genetics has changed dramatically over the last few years as a result of next generation sequencing. Rapid reductions in sequencing costs mean that it is now often less expensive and significantly faster to sequence an organism to find mutations, instead of using classical mapping methodologies. Many challenges remain, however, and sorting through the large amount of sequence data to identify all of the alterations in an organism’s genome remains a complex problem. In addition, informatically sorting out which of those changes are associated with specific phenotypes and which changes are silent can be a tedious, and often inaccurate, process. You will be working with other bionformaticists to evaluate different algorithms for mutation identification and will be involved in creating automated processes to perform both basic and more advanced analyses of the data.
'''Prerequisites:''' Programming with Python or Perl and 7.01 required. Interest in working multiple semesters in the lab is preferred.
'''Contact:''' Please send a cover letter describing your research interests and a resume to [[BiomicroCenter:People|Stuart Levine]] == [http://web.mit.edu/urop/ UROP 2] == '''Project Title:''' Analysis of the transcriptome using Next-Generation Sequencing.
'''Project Description:''' Next generation sequencing has revolutionized molecular biology, allowing labs to sequence 100’s of millions of DNA fragments at a time, producing billions of basepairs of sequence every day. RNA sequencing protocols have adapted this technology to quantifying gene expression. The enormous quantity of data produced has made the informatics associated with these projects challenging and data processing is a limiting step in many studies. The particular complexities of RNA splicing have made this area one of the most challenging to produce meaningful data. You will be working with other bioinformaticists to evaluate different RNA-seq algorithms and will be involved in creating automated processes to perform both basic and more advanced analyses of the data.
'''Prerequisites:''' Programming with Python or Perl and 7.01 required. The facility hosts and operates a large amount of advanced instrumentation as well as maintains significant integrated LIMS infrastructure to assist with data management and analysis. While maintaining a steady workflow, the BioMicro Center also performs experimental work aimed at optimizing and automating existing services offered at the facility. While co-ops are primarily responsible for quantification and sample prep, their tasks may extend further depending on the capabilities of the student.
Responsibilities and Duties: * Quantification of RNA and DNA samples * Creating Illumina-ready libraries for sequencing using a number of techniques * Optimizing protocols whenever necessary * Maintaining a detailed lab notebook * Inputting samples into central database * Interacting with users and researchers from inside and outside of the MIT community Job Skills Required: * Proficiency in basic lab skills (e.g. pipetting, proper sterile technique, dilutions) * Prior lab experience in a molecular biology setting * Maintenance of organized lab notes for a large number of projects * Solid mathematical background. * Moderate computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office, Google Calendar) * Acuity in maintaining sufficient lab supplies * Proficient interpersonal skills * Ability to work effectively in a group environment and independently * Ability to learn scientific principles and concepts efficiently * Motivational attitude, flexibility, and versatility when working in a rapidly growing environment.
